Journalism

My freelance journalism career started during graduate school at a small publication called Art Papers in Atlanta. I began writing reviews of visual art and books and soon began interviewing writers and artists for profiles and features.

When I moved to New York City, I worked for the Books and Poetry section of Time Out New York magazine and wrote regularly for newspapers such as The Christian Science Monitor and The Washington Post.

Several years later, when I finished my graduate work and started teaching full-time, I became a blogger for Girl w/ Pen, where I write about feminism and the issues facing women and girls globally. My opinion essays on topics that include motherhood and parenting, food allergies, and education have appeared in venues such as The New York Times Motherlode blog, CNN.com, and Brain, Child magazine. This section includes a good representation of my freelanced articles and blog posts, organized by theme.
